Die Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island) on the Havel River in Berlin is a popular tourist destination. The island is a nature reserve and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it is managed by Stiftung Preussische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg.
The island gets its name from the free-roaming peacocks, which sometimes perform a wheel for visitors. In addition to the peacocks, several water buffalo live on the island, serving as natural lawnmowers.
The park was designed by Peter Joseph Lenné from 1821 to 1834 based on the English model and features rare botanical specimens and hidden animal enclosures. This landscaping still defines the enchanting Peacock Island today.
